Fei Tian Academy of the Arts California's annual summer camp sessions began in the middle of last month, on June 13. Students from the Bay area and other US regions have joined us to participate in six half-day camps including Chinese Classical Dance, Chinese (Mandarin), music, fine arts, SAT preparation, and ESL.
Summer Camp Session I
Several camps have gone on field trips. The fine arts students visited the Pasados del Presidio's Afternoon Fun for Kids event on June 24th, which featured life and stories of Early California. The afternoon included music, dance, Ohlone storytelling, and exhibits. Fei Tian summer students enjoyed themselves, and particularly enjoyed opportunities to learn about new crafts and cooking. Several students made necklaces, for example.
Just last Friday, our SAT/ACT Preparation Camp and ESL Camp visited Stanford. Students from both camps were prepared ahead of time. During this preparation time, ESL students learned relevant vocabulary and both groups learned about what it takes to get to college. All of them arrived at Stanford prepared with questions to ask admissions officers. When an admissions officer made himself available to speak just to our students, they were prepared to find out exactly what they needed to get into Stanford – or into many other competitive colleges. Fei Tian students also had the opportunity to take a tour of the campus and jump into the fountains, as tradition dictates is acceptable, particularly on hot days such as that of the field trip. They are even chlorinated to better conform to Stanford student preferences and traditions.
Fei Tian Academy of the Arts California has been open since March, 2010, and this is the second summer we have offered summer camp options. While dance and Chinese have remained the most popular, other camps have responded to definite needs expressed by students and parents. The music and fine arts camps also reflect the school's growing music and fine arts departments.
Fei Tian's first Summer Session ended on July 8th with a performance by students, sharing what they have learned with parents, friends, and faculty. Our second session began on July 11th and lasts five weeks until August 12th. Second session registration is open on an ongoing basis, and students who have not yet signed up are encouraged to register. Students who cannot participate for an entire session may sign up on a weekly basis.
