Fei Tian students have performed twice at Portsmouth Square in San Francisco's Chinatown.
The first time on August 20th, Portsmouth Square welcomed fans of the performing arts for a treat in Chinese classical dance and music. Dance and music students from Fei Tian Academy of the Arts California contributed with their artistic talents. The full-time students who participated had been back from their vacation for just one week, but were eager to go out and participate in the community.
The dances included a handkerchief dance by the girls, a classical dance by the boys, and a drum dance, often popular with the crowd, which included all of the dance students. One of Fei Tian's newest erhu students participated as well, performing a beautiful piece with erhu teacher Mei Xuan. Mei Xuan, a soloist with Shen Yun Performing Arts before coming to Fei Tian, has been active in the community as well demonstrating her dedication to Fei Tian's students, performing in events such as the NTDTV-sponsored Under the Moonlight, an evening of classical Chinese music and art in September.
Students performed at Portsmouth Square for the second time three weeks later for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Dance students brought back their handkerchief dance and the drum dance, and erhu and flute students entertained spectators between dances. This performance was part of the city-wide Mid-Autumn festivities in San Francisco throughout the weekend. Aside from the Chinese New Year in late January or early February, the Mid-Autumn Festival is one of the larger and more widely celebrated yearly Chinese celebrations.
Fei Tian students expect to return to Portsmouth Square to perform throughout the year, so be on the lookout for updates! Their next performance there will be on November 12th, 2011.
