Thank You Uncle Bee's Farm!

At the Campbell Farmers Market on Sundays John and Annie of Uncle Bee’s Farm donate fresh vegetables and herbs to the school for healthy soups, salads and cooked dishes. Fei Tian students and faculty savor fresh green beans, bell peppers of many colors, heirloom tomatoes, lettuces, baby bok choy, green onions, eggplant, cucumbers and zucchini. The couple grows their produce on their farm in the Fresno area, working with John’s parents to plant and pick this bountiful selection.

A wide range of local people interested in freshly harvested fruits and vegetables flock to the market; young parents push their babies in strollers, parents with middle school children taste samples and discuss what to buy, and grandparents introduce their grandkids to the taste of real, ripe fruits and flavorful veggies, but it’s not just families who shop here, many people of all ages, solo or with friends, add the healthful ingredients to their diets by shopping here. The avenue between the stands can become crowded but people don’t mind, they don’t push, they adapt their pace or smoothly weave in and out, enjoying the time spent walking through the lines of stands, listening to one of the musicians entertaining the market’s patrons.

Supporting the farmers who bring their produce to the San Francisco or South Bay Farmers Markets provides benefits for both the customers and the farmers. Besides bringing home food that is unadulterated by chemicals or factory operations, the shoppers have a chance to connect with the farmers, showing their appreciation of their hard work and asking questions about what they are growing. By selling directly to the locals, the farmers have a chance to let their produce stay on the tree or vine until it is full of taste, then pick it and bring it to the market, where they receive a greater portion of the purchase price. The community also benefits by helping to ensure a safe, abundant food supply as the locals support the area farmers.
